Urban spaces are worldwide laboratories for mobility changes. In cities, many new mobility trends are emerging. Public transport and bicycle traffic are seeing high growth rates in the inner-city neighborhoods of European cities, the cycling infrastructure is being expanded further and new services are being developed, such as car and bike sharing. Also in other places, like in the major metropolises of Latin America or Asia, innovative transport concepts are being implemented, such as efficient bus rapid transit, the development of bicycle lanes or urban cable cars. At the same time, the quality of urban spaces decisively shapes urban traffic. Spaced low-density spaces favor e.g. the motorized individual traffic. In contrast, mixed and compact urban structures can promote walking and cycling.

The Department of City Planning and Urban Mobility addresses the links between mobility needs, urban mobility services and the built environment. It combines theoretical approaches with empirical findings on current developments in cities worldwide. In addition to individual means of transport such as cars or bicycles, multimodal and intermodal transport use is also analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the reasons for everyday mobility decisions, their interaction with the ownership and availability of mobility options and the relationship between destination and means of transport choices with the location of residence. The importance of urban infrastructures, such as the distribution and design of intermodal or multifunctional transport hubs for mobility decisions, are also analyzed.

The research is internationally comparative and applies methods of empirical social research, spatial-statistical analyses and mathematical models of the possession of means of transport, transport demand and the choice of residential location. With their help, traffic and urban planning interventions are considered and evaluated with regard to their influence on mobility behavior.
